The Bird of Paradise

Opening on 8 January 1912, the melodrama set on exotic Hawaii was written and directed by Richard Walton Tully. Laurette Taylor played Luana, the native princess who sacrifices herself for her man by throwing herself into the crater of a rumbling volcano. After 112 performances at Daly's Theatre in New York, it made a lot of money on the road before being made into a musical titled Luana (1930), as well as two motion picture versions (1932 and 1951).
